MUHOOZI & THE 2031 BALLOT : A PLOT STILL UNWRITTEN.

BY: Octavius Bin Evadius Tunanukye|

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's renewed interest in Uganda's 2031 presidency is politically significant , but it should not yet be mistaken for certainity. The history is instructive ,in 2023, Muhoozi expressed interest in contesting the 2026 presidential election , sparking the MK Movement , which later evolved into the Patriots League of Uganda (PLU) pressure group. Yet the anticipated presidential bid did not materialise , and Muhoozi did not appear on the 2026 ballot.

That experience offers a useful caution as the 2023conversation begins .Muhoozi may eventually contest, but he could also change course .His political influence and position make his ambitions worth watching, but they do not , by themesleves ,guarante a candidature.

There is also abroader question: Could his political project be intended not only to pursue the presidency , but also to calm , contain or potentially occupy some of the political space traditionally held by the opposition? That remains a matter for Political interpretation.

For his loyalists, the lesson is straightforward: loyalty should not become political certainty. They would be wise to keep their political options open rather than once again finding themselves without a clear path should their principal withdraw. In politics ,declarations are intentions; ballots are decisions.

Muhoozi may be on the 2031 ballot, or he may not. Until then , the democratic destination remains unwritten. After all , there are many ways of killing a rat.
