At the centre of the discussions are the wars involving Iran and the continuing crisis in Gaza, with world leaders under growing pressure to find diplomatic solutions capable of stopping the violence and protecting civilians.

The UN General Assembly’s high-level week, running from September 22 to 28, has brought together heads of state and government to discuss international peace, security, development and the future of multilateral cooperation.

For many observers, however, the Middle East has dominated the gathering.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres used his opening address to call for an immediate reduction in tensions across the region. He urged leaders to pursue dialogue and de-escalation, stressing that fighting must stop, humanitarian assistance must reach civilians and international law must be respected.

Iran conflict remains a major concern

The conflict involving Iran remains one of the biggest challenges before the international community.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is attending the General Assembly, while Tehran has indicated that its delegation has authority to pursue diplomatic negotiations.

According to Reuters, Iran has also expressed willingness to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz if the United States reduces military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian officials have described the UN gathering as an opportunity for diplomacy.

The development has created a potential opening for negotiations, although the conflict remains unresolved.

US President Donald Trump, addressing the General Assembly, defended Washington’s military approach towards Iran while also saying that a diplomatic agreement could still be reached. He presented negotiations as one possible route to ending the confrontation.

Gaza remains a test for the international community

Gaza has also taken centre stage, with the humanitarian situation continuing to generate international concern.

Guterres described the scale of death and destruction in Gaza as unprecedented in his experience and called for humanitarian aid to flow freely. He also warned that violence and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank were undermining prospects for a lasting political settlement.

A group of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly also called for the preservation of a Gaza ceasefire and the implementation of a broader peace plan, including humanitarian assistance, reconstruction and an international stabilization mechanism.
