DUBAI — Dubai is mourning the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of the Al Maktoum ruling family and younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Ahmed died on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 76, according to the Dubai Media Office and reports from regional media. His death has prompted a 10-day official mourning period across the emirate, with flags to be flown at half-mast.
The announcement has brought a sombre mood to Dubai, where Sheikh Ahmed had served for decades in public life and was known for his involvement in security, business and horse racing.
He was the Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, a position that placed him among senior figures involved in the emirate's security establishment. He was also associated with business interests and sporting activities, including Al Wasl Football Club and thoroughbred horse racing.
His death was met with an emotional tribute from his elder brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
In a message mourning his brother, Sheikh Mohammed prayed for God's mercy upon Sheikh Ahmed and described him as someone who would remain in the family's prayers and hearts.
The UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also expressed condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed described Sheikh Ahmed's longstanding contributions to the development of the UAE since its founding as part of the country's journey of progress.
Beyond his official responsibilities, Sheikh Ahmed developed a notable association with horse racing, an important sporting and cultural activity in the UAE.
His racing legacy included the development of Jebel Ali Racecourse and ownership of successful thoroughbreds. His horses competed internationally, with names such as Mtoto, Wassl and Ameerat becoming part of his racing history. Reports also noted that Saddadd was his most recent Group One winner, securing victory earlier in September 2026.
