As President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni celebrates his 82nd birthday today, September 15, 2026, Uganda pauses to reflect on the extraordinary and often debated political journey of a man who has remained at the centre of the country's affairs for more than four decades.

Born on September 15, 1944, in present-day Ntungamo District, Museveni grew up in a rural environment before entering politics and eventually becoming one of Africa's longest-serving heads of state.

His journey to State House was shaped by Uganda's turbulent political history. After the overthrow of Idi Amin in 1979, Museveni became increasingly involved in opposition politics. In February 1981, he launched the armed struggle that eventually led to the National Resistance Army taking power in January 1986.

Since then, Museveni has been a dominant figure in Uganda's political landscape.

For his supporters, his presidency represents a period of relative stability, economic development, infrastructure expansion and Uganda's growing involvement in regional affairs. They credit him with restoring order after years of political instability and giving Uganda a long-term development agenda.

His government has also placed strong emphasis on commercial agriculture, industrialisation, education, health, infrastructure and the integration of Uganda into the wider East African economy.

Museveni's political philosophy has also extended beyond Uganda. His speeches frequently focus on Pan-Africanism, economic independence, wealth creation and the need for African countries to move from exporting raw materials towards value addition.

At 82, the President enters another chapter of his political career at a significant moment.

In May 2026, Museveni was sworn in for another five-year presidential term after the January 2026 elections. His new administration has placed emphasis on implementing the 2026–2031 programme and pursuing Uganda's transition towards higher middle-income status.

But a birthday tribute to Museveni cannot only be about political achievements. It is also about the generations of Ugandans who have grown up knowing him as the country's president.

For many young Ugandans, Museveni has been the only president they have known. For the older generation, his rise to power remains connected to memories of war, political change and the transformation of Uganda's political system.

His presidency has also generated strong criticism and political opposition. Questions surrounding democratic competition, succession, political freedoms and the length of his time in power continue to form part of Uganda's national conversation. These contrasting views are part of the complex legacy surrounding his leadership.

Yet, regardless of political affiliation, Museveni's place in Uganda's modern history is difficult to ignore.

His 82nd birthday is therefore more than a personal celebration. It provides an opportunity to reflect on Uganda's past, present and future—and on the political journey of a leader whose name has become deeply intertwined with the country's story.

This year's birthday celebrations have also been linked to remembering those who participated in the liberation struggle. Organisers have described the commemoration as an opportunity to honour fallen fighters and reflect on the sacrifices associated with Uganda's political history.

As President Museveni marks another year, supporters celebrate his life, resilience and leadership, while critics continue to challenge aspects of his record.

Either way, one reality remains: Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has left an unmistakable mark on Uganda.

At 82, the story continues—and the next chapter will be watched closely by a new generation of Ugandans who will ultimately judge the legacy of the man who has dominated the country's political stage for so long.

Happy 82nd Birthday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

  1. As a matter of fact, the former rebel and Bush war General is and has been a man of such undoubted stamina for decades. His wisdon and resilience with which he has held power for ages makes him a master at the game, with unmeasurable experience. However, his climax will determine his final score. He has passed all political tests except a peaceful transition, passing on leadership to another government, democratically. I see his name on the ballot in 2031 in faint ink. May God bless Uganda.
