The mourning has ended, the final rites have been performed, and Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has been laid to rest. But for the Tooro Kingdom, another chapter is now beginning. With the burial of the late Omukama, attention is inevitably turning from grief to the future of the kingdom—and, above all, to the question of succession.

The throne of Tooro carries enormous cultural significance. It is not simply a seat occupied by an individual; it represents the history, identity, traditions and aspirations of the Batooro people. That is why the question of who comes next is likely to attract enormous attention.

For years, Omukama Oyo was the face of the kingdom. His journey to the throne as a young monarch made his reign unique in Uganda’s modern cultural history. His death has therefore created a vacuum that goes beyond the royal palace.

Now, the royal family, kingdom institutions, cultural leaders and subjects face the delicate responsibility of ensuring that the succession process is handled with dignity, unity and respect for Tooro traditions.

The coming period could generate intense public interest as different voices begin discussing the future leadership of the kingdom. Expectations will be high, and every decision made around succession is likely to be closely watched.

For the people of Tooro, however, the biggest concern should not simply be who occupies the throne.

It should be whether the kingdom remains united.

The passing of a monarch can test even the strongest institutions. Personal ambitions, competing interests and differing interpretations of tradition can easily create tensions if they are not carefully managed.

Tooro therefore enters a sensitive moment.
