Why Georginio Wijnaldum snubbed Barcelona And Joined PSG.

On Thursday 10th June, 2021, French Giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) announced the acquisition of Dutch football genius Georginio Wijnaldum on a three year deal.

It’s been a while when Barcelona were tipped as  the favorites to have the former Liverpool’s midfielder’s signature but to everyone’s surprise, the former New Castle star ended up at Mauricio Pochetino’s side.

Georginio says he was directly contacted by former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochetino and that greatly drove him to joining the French capital side. Financially, it is also said PSG handed the Dutch a much better and lucrative deal as compared to Barca’s.

In his official speech at Parc Des Princess, Georginio said, “I’m happy to join a club like Paris Saint-Germain,”  he continued…

“As a football player, you always want to play with the best players around you and when I look at the team and also when I spoke with the manager, I saw a team full of talented players and big players.

“And on top of that, I also saw a manager who can make the players even better and also capable of bringing all those players together to make a strong, strong team. I come here trying to write history with this unbelievable team.”

In his five years stay at Anfield, Wijnaldum helped the “Reds” to a first Premier League title in more than 25 years and a first Champions League title since 2005.

His experience in the mid field will be much needed by the French side that is yarning for a maiden champions league title, having reached the finals in 2020 where they lost to Bayern Munich and made it to the Semi Finals the next year and lost to eventual final runners up Manchester City.
