NUP Launches An Attack Against The International Monetary Fund

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s National Unity Platform (NUP) has come out to launch an attack against the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after it extended help towards Uganda.

The Uganda government last year at the start of the lockdown received funds from abroad meant to help in the fight against the deadly COVID 19 pandemic.

Many opposition political parties and critics came out to task the government to show the accountability of these funds.

The government however up to now has never accounted for these funds.

These went on to call upon Western governments and other international bodies to stop funding the government.

They say that these funds are instead used to oppress government opposers and the majority who support them.

These also go ahead to say that the money is swindled and only satisfies the interests of a few individuals instead of the majority.

However, the IMF did not heed to these calls as it approved a US$1 billion finance package.

This is meant to help Uganda overcome the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic.

“The IMF Executive Board has approved a US$1 billion financing package for Uganda to support the COVID-19 response and recovery.

The program includes reforms to strengthen governance and transparency.” IMF announced.

This did not go down well with the Kamwokya based political party which hit at the body right away.

NUP labeled the IMF as a predatory organ which does not care about the rights of the people it thinks it is helping.

The party went ahead to wonder how the organization could go ahead to advance more funds yet the government could not account for the previous ones.

“It’s predatory for the #IMF to agree to lend more funds to a regime which failed to account for a significant sums from the 2020 Covid Relief loans received and misappropriated this on suppressing political opposition and on violating the #HumanRights of the people of #Uganda.” NUP attacked in a tweet.

This follows calls by the party’s leader last week to the Western governments to stop funding Uganda.

However, despite these calls, international bodies and countries have continued to wine and dine with President Museveni.
