Africell Uganda is winding up its operations today in the country. This means that all services of Africell including internet services, calls and Africell Money will cease to exist.

People who were still having balance on Africell Money were wondering on how they will access their money balance since the telecom operator is closing, however Bank of Uganda has issued a guidance on how Africell customers can access their money.

“Bank of Uganda wishes to notify the public that Africell Uganda Limited shall cease to deliver mobile money services with effect from October 7, 2021,” Said Bank of Uganda in a statement. “This follows the company’s voluntary exit from the Ugandan Market”

According a statement from Bank of Uganda, Africell has been doing Mobile Money services in partnership with Stanbic Bank with approval from Bank of Uganda the central bank of Uganda.

Africell customers will therefore be able to access their money from any branch of Stanbic Bank in the country.

Customers were advised to come with Identification details and an alternative number or bank account where the balance will be deposited after verifying their identity.

The exercise will run for a period of 90 days beyond which the undisbursed balance and details of the beneficiaries will be transferred to the Bank of Uganda.

Africell Uganda has been one of the four companies that provide mobile money services in Uganda, the other three being Uganda Telecom with M-Sente, MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda. Its exit follows an announcement on September 07th about company’s plans to exit the country.
